Seit 1990 ist auch in Osteuropa die Herausbildung von Regionen als subnationale Handlungseinheiten zu beobachten. Dies wird zum einen durch die Revitalisierung von historischen Regionen begünstigt, zum anderen durch den Einfluss einer neuen, wettbewerbsorientierten Marktordnung. In welchem Verhältnis steht diese Regionalisierung zur Transition? Zur Beantwortung dieser Frage werden Herkunft, Handlungsmuster und Strategien lokaler Akteure und Eliten untersucht, die an der Herausbildung dieser Regionen beteiligt waren und sind. Der Band enthält sechs Fallstudien: Krakau/Malopolska (Polen), Debrecen/Hajdú-Bihar (Ungarn), Timisoara/Timis (Rumänien) und L'viv (Ukraine) werden dabei als potenziell neue Regionen verstanden, bei denen es sich bis jetzt nicht um Wirtschaftszentren, wohl aber um Gebiete mit starker regionaler Identität gehandelt hat. Mit Oberschlesien (Polen) und dem Donbass (Ukraine) kommen zwei Industriezentren hinzu, die sich im Umbruch befinden. Für die Fallstudien wurden umfangreiche Forschungsdaten aus den behandelten Regionen ausgewertet.
