Der Band, der aus der Zusammenstellung ausgewählter Beiträge zur Jahrestagung 1998 der "Association for the Study of Modern and Contemporary France" der Universität Bradford entstand, bietet weniger eine Bestandsaufnahme der politischen Institutionen Frankreichs vierzig Jahre nach der Gründung der V. Republik als vielmehr einen Einblick in die aktuelle politische Kultur des Landes. Gezielt "alternativ" und interdisziplinär sind die Themen gewählt, die die Leitfrage beantworten sollen, inwieweit eine Tendenz innerhalb der französischen Gesellschaft hin zum "communitarisme" auszumachen ist: Definieren sich Franzosen heute noch als Staatsbürger der V. Republik, oder fühlen sie sich eher kleineren sozialen Gruppen - ob ethnischer, politischer oder sexueller Zugehörigkeit - verbunden?
