Die Dutch Reformed Church (DRC) Südafrikas unterstützte die Regierungspolitik von 1948 bis zum Ende der Apartheid 1994; zwischen Regierungsmitgliedern und Kirchenvertretern bestanden enge Kontakte. In den Beiträgen des ersten Teils wird detailliert untersucht, aus welchen theologischen und gesellschaftlichen Gründen die DRC die Apartheidpolitik so viele Jahre lang stützte. Die Frage, welche Rolle die DRC in der nachfolgenden Transformationsphase spielte, steht im Mittelpunkt des zweiten Teils. Im dritten Teil finden sich verschiedene Analysen der DRC-Publikation „Die Kerkbode" zu diesem Thema. Das Verhältnis der Kirche zur Politik wird in den Beiträgen des vierten Teils diskutiert. Im fünften Teil thematisieren die Autoren aktuelle Herausforderungen und erörtern, wie die DRC derzeit mit neueren (theologischen) Ansätzen und Impulsen wie beispielsweise der feministischen Theologie umgeht.
