Nach dem Zusammenbruch des Sozialismus haben die osteuropäischen Soziologen häufig einen positivistischen Standpunkt eingenommen - auch um sich gegen das vorher dominierende, ideologisch geprägte Verständnis abzugrenzen. Demgegenüber wird in den westlichen Ländern eher eine relativistische Position vertreten, mit der Folge, dass die Soziologie oftmals ihr gesellschaftskritisches Potenzial nicht nutzt. Diese unterschiedlichen Herangehensweisen und damit verbunden die Frage nach dem Selbstverständnis und der Rolle der Soziologie in modernen Gesellschaften waren das Thema einer Konferenz, die im Juni 2002 in Georgien stattfand. Die Beiträge wurden zu einem großen Teil von Wissenschaftlern (überwiegend Doktoranden osteuropäischer Universitäten) verfasst, die aufgrund ihrer internationalen Arbeitserfahrungen beide Systeme und die damit verbundenen Divergenzen kennen.
