Die Beiträge haben das Verhältnis von Religion und Politik in der sich verändernden, multireligiösen Gesellschaft Südafrikas zum Thema. Dabei zielen die Autoren nicht nur auf die Transformation von Apartheid zur Demokratie, sondern auch auf die globalisierungsbedingten Veränderungen unter den Rahmenbedingungen des 21. Jahrhunderts. Folgende drei thematische Schwerpunkte lassen sich identifizieren: das Spannungsfeld von Öffentlichkeit und Privatsphäre; das für Südafrika besonders relevante Verhältnis von Einheit (des Staates) und Vielfalt (der Religionen) sowie das Verhältnis von Tradition und Veränderung.
